Synopsis
"Thank You So Much" begins with Karl and Susan discussing their wedding. When Karl asks Susan to use her old wedding ring, she admits that she threw it out the window of her car the night he left. Karl makes her go back out to Route 7 to find it.
Bree goes to dinner by herself and gets drunk. When she arrives home she stumbles to the ground and falls alseep there in her front yard. At the Scavo's, Lynette and Tom have been called in to work. Tom has asked Mrs. McCluskey to babysit, but Lynette is worried that her age might prevent her from caring properly for the kids. She tells Mrs. McCluskey that she's not needed. Gabrielle arrives home from shopping and looks up at a window to find Carlos standing with an unidentifiable woman. Garbielle rushes upstairs to find that it's her mother.
After informing Gabrielle that she left her latest (millionaire) beau, Lucia leaves the room. Carlos is amused by Lucia but Gabrielle tells him she's really a monster. At Susan's, Dr. Ron leaves after having spent the night, and Susan tells Julie to bring the wedding ring to Karl. Bree's children needle her about her drinking, but she insists that she merely had an allergic reaction to her antihistamines. At that moment, Lynette arrives to ask Bree to babysit. Over at the Young's, Zach questions Paul about his real parents. Viewers are then taken to Noah Taylor's house, where he's being told about his daughter's murder.
Edie is looking for something when she comes across Karl's briefcase. She sees the wedding ring and the pre-marriage agreement and assumes they're for her. At the Scavo's, the twins are making such a ruckus that Bree decides to have a bit of wine. She ends up falling asleep, so the twins take Penny and leave the house. Gabrielle and Carlos find out from the doctor that it's not certain she can get pregnant again. Lucia offers to be a surrogate, an idea Gabrielle doesn't like.
Lynette and Tom get a call from a woman who has stopped the twins and kept them safe. When Lynette gets the kids back home, Bree tells her that she had been in the kitchen when the kids snuck out. Gabrielle offers to take her mother shopping. Gabrielle ends up leaving Lucia at a hotel and tells her to leave town as soon as possible. Carlos reprimands her for it and suggests that, rather than hold a grudge, she should have talked to her mother about the sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of her step-father. Gabrielle admits she never did because she was afraid Lucia wouldn't believe her. Meanwhile, Mike visits Paul and tells him that Noah wants to see Zach. Mike doesn't want Noah to meet Zach so he advises Paul to take Zach and leave. Zach is eavesdropping in the other room.
Karl and Edie are dining at the same restaurant as Dr. Ron and Susan. In the ladies room, Edie informs Susan that she thinks Karl is going to propose that evening. Susan tries to tell her not to get her hopes up but Edie doesn't listen. Carlos brings Lucia her luggage and when he tries to talk to her, he finds that Lucia has a very different view on what happened between Gabrielle and the step-father. Disgusted, Carlos leaves. Outside of Edie's house, Susan grabs Karls attention and tells him that Edie found the ring and pre-nup. He says he'll make amends by actually proposing to Edie.
Lynette finally realizes that Bree had been drinking but Bree continues to deny it. Lynette takes all the empty wine bottles out of Bree's trash and lines them up on her porch. Karl and Susan get married.
Analysis
First things first, I was thoroughly disappointed that the Applewhite storyline was left untouched this week. The writers have finally forced me to take an interest in this particular plot and then I'm left denied! Not that I was surprised, the writers seem to want to jam pack so much into this show that picking and choosing what gets told in each episode becomes necessary. Ah well, there's always next week, I'm sure.
Susan and Karl...well, it's obvious that this storyline is going somewhere, I just can't decide if I'd like to see it go into the drama of Susan and Karl falling back in love, or for their respective significant others, Dr. Ron and Edie, to find out and cause a fuss. To me, even though it's almost eye-rollingly cliche, the more interesting route would be for Karl and Susan to rekindle their romance. It seems that the writers are already nudging in this direction with Julie's foreshadowing comment about not wanting to see any "lingering gazes." Also, when Susan and Karl talk outside of Edie's house and Karl makes the decision to propose to Edie, it's obvious by the look on Susan's face that this isn't something she's expecting, nor does she want it. And finally, the clincher...when Susan and Karl hug, Susan's comment that she no longer has feelings for Karl is anything but convincing. Equally unconvincing is Karls comment that he was merely fooling around about it. These two characters have a romantic history and unresolved issues...it ought to be interesting to see where the writers take this plot.
It would seem that Gabrielle's promise to Carlos to think about kids someday has come to fruition. It's rather sad that Gabrielle finds out that she might not be able to get pregnant again, but it's also interesting. I'm not sure how many feel this way about her, but personally, I don't find Gabrielle to be a bad person. She might be rather inherently selfish but it's hard to think that she's truly malicious. It should be intriguing to watch how Gabrielle reacts during adoption proceedings, if, indeed, she and Carlos go through it. After all, it was obvious that she'd finally cared for the baby she was carrying and, if they adopt, it'd be only a matter of time before she'd fall head over heels for that child, too, and I think the journey could possibly be one of growth.
Lucia is a real piece of work, isn't she? It was easy to dislike her after Gabrielle's emotional moment with Carlos, where she admitted that she was afraid Lucia wouldn't believe her if she spoke about the sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of her step-father. It was easier to hate her once we saw, through Carlos' conversation with her, Lucia's side of the story. Lucia is obviously too self-centered a woman to care much about her own child and it's hopeful that Gabrielle, in that journey of growth that I mentioned above, can recognize this and nip it in the bud if she finds herself on the same path.
It may be just me but I think Bree's drinking problem seems to have cropped up almost out of nowhere. Granted, it has been mentioned before, but not consistently enough. The fact that she's been putting away enough to fall to the ground in her front yard and sleep there all night was somewhat of a surprise, actually. However, regardless of how quick the writers are pushing this storyline, I think it's a great show of continuity to have Lynette be the one to try to help Bree. Not only do Bree and Lynette seem to have a closer relationship, but Lynette also battled her own addiction to the twins' ADD medication in season one. If there's anybody that should be helping Bree it is most certainly Lynette. Now to sit back and see how Bree reacts to having Lynette try to help her.
I'm hoping against hope that Paul's comment to Mike about if he takes Zach and leaves that they won't come back could be the chance to shut the door on a far-too-long-and-drawn-out storyline. After all, Mike said it himself, it's only a matter of time before Noah kicks the bucket, all they have to do is wait him out. Unfortunately, because of the fact that Zach was eavesdropping and now knows Mike is his father, the door that could be shut probably won't be. Drama will most likely ensue. Yawn.
Overall, this episode seemed to have a lot of minute details going on, rather than large action filled scenes. That's ok, every once in a while we need episodes that serve to set up any future action or changes in storylines. This episode seems merely a bridge for more. Discuss this reviews at Talk Desperate!
