Marcia Cross People Guide Poor Bree. Her husband is murdered, her son hates her and then her psychopathic killer boyfriend tops himself. It's now going to prove too much for Bree, as she hits the bottle for comfort.
"We're starting her descent into alcoholism," Marc Cherry told TV Guide, according to The Mercury News. He added that there will be some unpleasant moments with the other housewives as alcohol takes hold. "It gets pretty ugly," he said.
Cherry indicated this was not a last minute decision however, and the groundwork has been laid since the start of the show. "When Bree has tension, she grabs a glass," he said. "Chart it back and you'll see so many moments where she just goes for the wine."
In real life, Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) is a chronic migraine sufferer so actually avoids alcohol. But Desperate Housewives will join a growing number of shows that has tackled the subject of alcoholism. Until his untimely death this month, John Spencer played one of TV's most prominent alcoholics Leo McGarry in NBC's The West Wing. Other characters on TV to have an alcohol problem include Kirsten Cohen in Fox's The O.C. and Abby Lockhart in NBC's E.R..
