Steven Culp People Guide,
James Denton People Guide The men of Desperate Housewives Monday admitted that many of them see parallels between the characters on the show and their own lives.
"I think Rex bears a lot of guilt and anger and self-loathing," Steven Culp (Rex Van De Kamp) said during an interview session on ABC's Good Morning America. "And what does he do? He projects it all unto Bree. 'It's your fault, it's your fault.' When you start taking that on, you can see how you do it, as well."
Culp, still wearing a bath robe after having just filmed a scene for the show, was interviewed along with most of the other male DH stars straight from the Wisteria Lane set. To kick off the interview, the men were asked if they ever feel themselves longing for some more attention for the "Desperate Husbands". "Absolutely. Constantly," joked Culp, while Ricardo Chavira (Carlos Solis) joked they were still waiting for their own poker night. "It's the only way we'll all get together," said James Denton (Mike Delfino), to which Jesse Metcalfe (John Rowland) responded by asking if he'd be invited, too. "No," the other men said in unison, all laughing. "No booze for you," joked Chavira, although Mark Moses (Paul Young) allowed for the possibility of Metcalfe delivering the pizza.
Doug Savant (Tom Scavo) continued the Metcalfe teasing, saying that he thought "Jesse Metcalfe is actually personally responsible for the firing of gardeners throughout the country." James Denton added that it was either that, or "the increase of landscaping businesses." This lead Ricardo Chavira to distill the first life lesson that can be learned from Desperate Housewives: "Hire an ugly gardener and an ugly nanny, that's the trick, that's the moral."
But then the "Husbands" got more serious. "The first time we saw the pilot, my wife was watching," Culp said. "You know, Lynette and her kids? [My wife] was just cracking up. You know, we have three-year old twins, and it totally changes your life. We love our families, we love our kids, but there are those days when you're lying there and you think, 'If I just get into the car, and start driving, maybe no one will find me. Where did my live go?' We love the fact that this show kind of admits to that, kind of cops to that, because it's a universal feeling."
Even Metcalfe, one of the few actors present who's not married, and the only one without children, said the show has taught him a lot about long-term relationships. "Despite what you might think, men need a lot more than just sex. And Lynette provides [Tom Scavo] with a lot of support and that's important in a marriage. I've never been married, and I don't have the relationship experience that [the other guys] have, but I have learned from watching the show, that if you want to make a marriage last, it seems, you have to be willing to compromise."
"And communicate," added Culp. "Jump through hurdles," said Moses, prompting laughter from the other men. "And even, throughout the course of all the communication, she will still always be right," said Chavira, to which Culp quickly added, "Yes, yes, don't forget that!"
In addition to his light-hearted interview for Good Morning America, James Denton also gave a separate interview to the British showbiz site ContactMusic, in which he revealed that Desperate Housewives is one of the easiest jobs he's ever had, because he's hardly ever on the set. "The cast is so big that you really don't work very much," he said. "Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) only works a couple days a week shooting, but her schedule is much crazier with publicity stuff. I'm off at least three or four days a week, so it's a perfect job, really."
More from the other DH men, including Mark Moses' admission that as a kid, he did a lot of the things Andrew Van De Kamp is doing, as well as Ricardo Chavira's thoughts on the importance of being honest, can be found in the full 4-minute interview segment that aired on last Monday's Good Morning America.
