Felicity Huffman People Guide,
Shawn Pyfrom People Guide Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) continued her winning streak last night, as she added the SAG statue for 'Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Comedy' to her burgeoning awards collection.
The 12th annual SAG awards, the self-congratulatory event where actors get to vote for the winners, saw Huffman see off competition including Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker who recently beat Huffman in the Golden Globes. In her acceptance speech, Huffman thanked both her husbands as well as the Desperate Housewives producers.
"Thank you so much," she began. "Thank you to the Screen Actors Guild, to Marc Cherry, who never sees the light of day, to all of our writers, Tom Spezialy, Kevin Murphy. Our producers, George Perkins, Larry Shaw—you know how when you do this you can't remember your mom's name? David Grossman... thank you to the crew, which is tireless, to the dream team of Sherilyn [sp] Stubbs and James Dunham. To Marcia [Cross], Teri [Hatcher], Eva [Longoria], Nicollette [Sheridan] and Alfre [Woodard]. To my other TV husband, Doug Savant.
"I love actors, I married one—okay I married a fantastic one," she said, as the audience applauded. "I know. But even more than acting, I love the community of actors. I love the green room, I love the hair and makeup trailer, and I am so grateful that I am acting, and I am so grateful I can make a living at it, because I was never very good at math. So thank you very much."
Huffman lost out on the 'Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role' award for Transamerica—it went to Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener. But she didn't go home empty handed, and her award for Desperate Housewives is the latest in a string of recognitions. At the recent Golden Globe awards she lost out on award for Housewives to Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker, but instead won an award for Transamerica. Other prominent recent wins include an Emmy for Housewives, where she beat last year's winner Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer).
The cast of Desperate Housewives also won a collective award, in the 'Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series' category. Last year Doug Savant gave the acceptance speech even though he wasn't part of the main cast, and this year the tradition continued as Shawn Pyfrom (Andrew Van De Kamp) gave the speech. He admitted that the experience was "intimidating", but Nicolette Sheridan gave him a few words of encouragement. "Just thank you to the Screen Actors Guild, you know," he said, "for giving us all this moment, you know, to stand up here and thank our peers for nominating us, and voting for us, and, of course, we wouldn't all be standing up here if it wasn't for our amazing cast and—this is like my heart is beating out of my chest. And our producers and amazing writers, and the brilliant Marc Cherry and ABC and Touchstone, and just... our casting directors. Thank you to all of you." And, apologetic for his character's behavior, he added: "Please don't hate me, guys."
Lost also picked up an award for ABC, winning the 'Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series' award. Terry O'Quinn (John Locke ) accepted the award on behalf of the cast. "A friend of mine always says, if you don't have something nice to say about someone, let's hear it," he joked. "So, about our cast, I'd like to say that this is the saddest collection of climbing, grasping, paranoid, backstabbing, scene-grabbing, losers and schmoozers, that you ever saw on your stage in your life. But we love each other very much."
In other good news for ABC, Sandra Oh from Desperate Housewives' leadout Grey's Anatomy took home the 'Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series' award. She paid tribute to the casting of the show. "I'm really proud to be on a show whose casting is a little more representative of how I think the world is. So, to—you know, to all my fellow Asian-Americans out there, I share this with you. And be encouraged and keep shining. Thank you very much."
