Online reviewers have weighed in on the ninth episode of Desperate Housewives season two.
Here's what they had to say about "That's Good, That's Bad":
- Michael Slezak reviewing for EW.com said Gabrielle has "revived the season", and spelled out his favorite formula:
Choose one of our four heroines. Pit her against a formidable opponent. Have said housewife behave outrageously, surprisingly, and preferably just a bit wickedly. Most importantly, even when she looks licked, make certain she never, ever grovels. Pretty much all of my favorite Wisteria Lane memories fit the recipe [...] so imagine my delight that nine episodes into a second season that's had its share of half-baked character motivations, overheated twists, and hard-to-swallow ideas, the show's writers finally cooked up a scenario worthy of multiple helpings. Not since the early days of Mrs. Tilman and Mama Solis has a Wisteria Lane newcomer been as sinfully delicious an adversary as Sister Mary Bernard, or as Gabrielle calls her, the 'hot nun'."
To read his full analysis, where he said he felt George hasn't been a good counterpoint for Bree and that Paul Dooley (Susan's Father Addison) seemed to act like he was "reviewing his grocery list", visit EW.com.
- Sarah Gilbert at TV Squad was the opposite of Slezak; she liked Bree's story but was not fond of Gabrielle's. "The scene where she's luring Carlos into the bedroom while the nun waits in the dining room below is so awkward, it's almost painful. You'd think those poorly-played tempting tactics wouldn't really work on a man who'd slept with Gabriella for years. But... they do. Something about Gabriella fighting the church with her ass sits wrong with me."
- RT at Desperate for Desperate Housewives found Gabrielle's story to be one of the funniest of the episode:
Someone emailed me questioning whether this means Gabrielle's given up her character development she gained this season, but I don't agree... she promised to be faithful, and she was a bit sad about the end of her pregnancy. She never said goodbye to being materialistic! I am curious about where Gabrielle's plot is headed next. Even more importantly, this storyline proved to be the funniest one of the night.

- Don Chareunsy at SanOnSanDiego.com said George singing to Bree was "one of the show's more brilliant opening sequences", and that it "was one of the best episodes so far this season, if not the best. There was drama and intrigue, humor and heart. And Bree, showcasing a few gowns, looked and was spectacular all-around. Move over, Felicity. You've got some strong competition for next year's Emmy." Chareunsy also commented on the official details that ABC released for the episode. "Shame on ABC for saying on its website that Betty would attempt to help Caleb in tonight's episode. Unless I was still in my Thanksgiving lunch and dinner coma, I don't recall Betty in this episode. Not that I missed her. At all."
- Dave Anderson at TV Guide Online seemed to talk about memories spurred on by the show rather than the show itself, talking about his karaoke, coming from Chicago and spotting a Nip/Tuck actress. "The last person we ever thought would compete with Gabi for Carlos was a nun—and what a tough nun Sister Mary is! I laughed hysterically when she said, 'I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. If you want to threaten me, you're going to have to do a lot better than that.' Whenever I show my 'tough' side, I completely credit it to my being from where? The South Side of Chicago." Anderson, unlike Slezak, said Dooley was "great" as Susan's father.
- There is also brief recap at Television Without Pity, where visitors have so far rated the episode A- in a poll.
- And AP Television Writer Frazier Moore (via Yahoo!) wrote a recap of the final moments of the show.
- Finally, to tide you over to the next new episode, there is a new episode of Desperate Houseflies online.
