Online reviewers have weighed in on the season finale of Desperate Housewives.

Here's what they had to say about "Getting Married Today":

  • Karen Leigh at EW.com said the theme of the importance of family provided some "damn gripping drama", but said that Edie should survive and called for an end to the morbidity.

I've felt sad for Edie (as when her newly loving son Travers headed out the door with his dad), but I've never truly identified with her as a human being or seen what makes her tick. From day one, she's always been a genuine over-the-top caricature. My beef this season was that the writers decided that Edie needed to be an Actual Person With Feelings and Needs, which translated into a few awkwardly loving (well, more like liking) scenes with her son and the [...] breakdown as Carlos stormed off at Gaby's wedding. Next season, I say bring back who-cares-about-her-soul-because-she-doesn't-have-one Edie (after a last-minute rescue, of course) and leave all this morbidity at the door."
You can read her full analysis over at EW.com.

  • Dave Anderson at TV Guide Online refused to believe that Edie is dead. "I am speechless. You know how much I love my Edie. Would it be too much to ask to have Carlos heroically and miraculously walk in during the very first scene this fall and save her? I do not want this show to go on without Nicollette Sheridan. Yes, Edie is not one of the four main housewives, but the show would not be the same without her. Soap operas have had people hang themselves and be saved at the last minute. Until I get a confirmation, I'm going to spend this entire summer believing Edie is not dead. Just call me DID — 'Dave In Denial'."

  • Jen Creer at TV Squad was also in a state of denial. "We all know that chances are that Edie isn't actually dead. This is television after all. But I didn't think she would be distraught enough for a suicide attempt. I really thought she would end up pregnant at the end of this episode, and that she and Carlos would continue to be an item. I think somebody (probably Carlos) will come in and save Edie, but I wonder what will happen next. Carlos definitely seems like the kind of guy to get back together with her (look at me continuing to assume she's still alive!) because he doesn't want her to hurt herself again. But what does that mean for him and Gaby? Sticky...messy...can't wait for Season 4! "

  • There is also recap at Television Without Pity, where visitors have so far rated it a B+.
