By Antony May 29, 2005 - 10:02 PMSee Also: 'One Wonderful Day' Episode Guide
Online reviewers have weighed in on the Desperate Housewives season finale.
Here's what they had to say about "One Wonderful Day":
- Ann Hodgman reviewing for EW.com said the episode felt like "like a plateful of warmed-up leftovers":
It's hard to imagine why the writers thought it would be a good idea to let Mary Alice hijack this week's crucial opening segment, thereby derailing most of the suspense that built up last week. We've all been wondering who was going to die, whether Tom would dump Lynette, where Andrew's been hiding his cute bad self, what would happen as Carlos nosed closer and closer to John. Yes, it's interesting to learn that Mary Alice is the one who killed Deirdre and that she couldn't live with the guilt—but who has ever been that concerned about the precise details of Mary Alice's back story? Why open the episode by addressing questions whose answers aren't that surprising?
To read her full analysis, in which she said "now that most of the suspense has leaked out of the story like helium from a balloon, we can all have a nice relaxing summer", head over to EW.com.
- Danny Spiegel talked about the end of the Mary Alice storyline at TV Guide Online. "At the very beginning of the series, Susan asked, 'Mary Alice, what did you do?' And now we finally know the entire sordid mess. But except for the actual knife thrust, nothing was particularly new or shocking. What I am surprised about though, is that it seems ridiculously obvious that Zach is Mike's son. Boy, just think how proud Mike will be to reconnect with his violent, out-of-his-mind offspring. 'So let me get this straight, while I was threatening to kill your 'adoptive' father, you clocked Felicia Tillman? Huh.'" You can read the full review here.
- John Duran at InsidePulse.com posted a recap of the episode. In his "final word" Duran said: "One of the best episodes of the season, and certainly the best one since Lynette said "What?" to a deaf woman. After all the plodding around with the piddly storylines, everything gets serious for about 40 minutes and we all go down to the darkest depths of Fairview, and we find the view is in fact not so fair."
- Bob Sassone at TV Squad was also impressed. "Well, you certainly can't say that the Desperate Housewives season finale skimped on the action or answers. They even shortened the theme song so they could get right to the story."
- The New York Daily News was very happy with the episode. "The first-season finale of ABC's Desperate Housewives had it all. Each leading lady got a juicy story line, some mysteries were solved at the same time that other cliff-hangers were hung—and viewers even got the first glimpse of suicidal housewife Mary Alice since the series premiere."
- Matt Feeny in a more general review of Desperate Housewives at Slate said he's not impressed with where the series has gone. "A show that began last September as a wonderful guilty pleasure had by May turned into something strangely embarrassing. Desperate Housewives was set up for the letdown by the pretensions of its creator. ... For the first half of the season, [Marc] Cherry's inspired staging and some deft comic acting—especially by [Eva] Longoria and, surprisingly, Teri Hatcher—provided a welcome distraction from the show's deeper, and lamer, pretensions. But then his chatty narrator kept bringing the big, dumb underlying themes to the surface, talking openly about issues it would have been better for everyone just to repress." The full review can be found at Slate.
- There is no review yet at Desperate for Desperate Housewives, but there is a scene-by-scene analysis.
- There is also complete recap at Television Without Pity, where visitors have so far rated the episode B+ in a poll.
- Finally, Desperate Housewives may be on haitus, but there's a new episode of Desperate Houseflies online.
