By Antony April 29, 2006 - 8:31 PMEdie and Susan have been at odds since the show began, but now you can really expect sparks to fly according to Richard Burgi (Karl Mayer) after his character breaks up with Edie in favor of Susan.
"Well, let's put it this way: [the breakup] doesn't go over very well," he told TV Guide. "It's met with some, uh, anger, as you could imagine, and a buildup of venom." He said that Edie "gets a little 'hot.' She puts a little mojo out there. All kinds of things happen as a result of it. The fallout is chaotic and widespread."
He added that Edie soon finds out that Susan is the reason he broke up with her. "It's actually revealed rather soon," he said. "She finds out with some prodding and assiduous investigation. Once she finally comes to terms with it, she takes action and it's, uh, not pretty. God, you will see some women going at it in some very interesting situations. Yeah, there's nothing like a good catfight."
Talking about his other work, he revealed that he was in the running for the lead role of Jack Bauer in 24. Kiefer Sutherland landed the role, and Burgi was given another role in the show's first season. He said with both 24 and Desperate Housewives he didn't think about the shows' success, just that they were well written. "You know, the same thing happened with Desperate Housewives: I really didn't think anything other than what we were doing was interesting. I liked the 24 script, which is why I was so passionate about it."
Burgi also gave a quick update on Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) after her eye was injured on set. "My god, the poor thing," he said. "I had just left the set [before it happened]. I called her that night and she told me about it. I was blown away. Fortunately, the cornea is the quickest-healing part of the eye. She's such a trouper, man—a hardworking lady and a good sport."
