Five weeks of pre-emptions and reruns don't seem to have hurt Desperate Housewives: last Sunday's new episode "The Ladies Who Lunch" was by far the most popular television program last night, attracting 24 million viewers.
According to figures released by MediaWeek, Desperate Housewives scored a 16.1 rating with a 24 share. These figures mean that of all households in the United States with television sets, 16.1% were tuned into DH, as well as 24% of those households actually watching television on Sunday at 9:00pm. The series also did well in the category of viewers aged between 18 and 49, which is a group that advertisers are especially eager to reach - the show scored a 10.7/25 among this demographic.
Following "The Ladies Who Lunch," ABC aired the series premiere of Grey's Anatomy, its new medical drama. Although the show lost almost a third of the Desperate Housewives audience to end up with a total viewership number of 16.25 million people, that still made it the top-rated show of the hour. MediaWeek noted the premiere of Grey's Anatomy managed to beat that of Boston Legal, as back in October 2004 that show only attracted 13.07 million viewers. Grey's Anatomy will continue to be the Desperate Housewives lead-out show for the next several weeks.
Thanks to the success of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy, as well as a timeslot-winning performance by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 8:00pm, ABC managed to win Sunday night both in terms of total viewers and the number of viewers in the 18-49 category. However, it wasn't a full-blown victory, as CBS's coverage of the NCAA Basketball Championships as well as strong showings by 60 Minutes and Cold Case helped the Eye network just edge past the Alphabet in the overall household ratings.
