By Antony August 29, 2005 - 12:17 AMHello World! The spectre of massive companies like supermarket giant Tesco is a mixed blessing. On the one hand they have got where they are through good customer service and competitive prices. But on the other hand, once big they can exert more and more pressure on suppliers and can control more and more markets.
But either way, what is amusing is sour grapes.
Lee Scott, chief executive of Wal-Mart which owns the #2 supermarket Asda, has been whining that Tesco has too much power and the government should intervene.
But if Asda actually gave two hoots about its customers, then maybe they'd be able to challenge the likes of Tesco. Practices like saying you have to spend a certain amount if you want to park doesn't encourage custom, yet Asda does this. Having a lack of basic goods, such as milk or bread, doesn't encourage custom, yet Asda often does this. Not letting customers shop because they're letting the BBC film during opening hours does not encourage custom, yet Asda does this.
And when we complained about the filming, six weeks later they still haven't replied to our letter. Someone at their head office (who had all the politeness of a rock) said they receive a lot of complaints and they have a large backlog. (I wonder why.)
I of course know that monopolies can be a bad thing. But why do competitors, with their shoddy service, expect the government to then intervene? Another company having a large market share isn't an excuse for poor service.
So, Lee Scott, get your own house in order before you start crying to daddy. And don't moan about your market share when you rent out your floorspace to film crews. Talk Desperate! threads Poll Results Below are the results of the most recent Get Desperate! poll:
