By Antony June 28, 2006 - 5:09 PMThe Emmy nominations process has kicked off, but industry experts predict that Housewives will not fair as last year.
According to Media Life the Emmy nomination process has changed, "with the aim of giving more shows and more actors the opportunity to be nominated and win. The Academy asked voters to hand in a list of 10 best shows instead of five, as in past years. It will then have a special committee rank the shows to determine the five nominees. [...] After years of being beat up for nominating the same shows year after year, the Academy's logic seemed to be that this would lead to a wider variety of programs being nominated."
The site said it believes Desperate Housewives will not do as well this year, after receiving a massive 15 nominations in its debut year. 74% of voters in a poll said that Housewives would not get as many nominations for its second—and frequently criticized—season.
Nomination DVDs have been created by the networks to woo voters, and as is customary many are turning up on eBay. There is already a listing offering discs for shows such as Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. The Housewives disc contains "Next", "One More Kiss" and "Could I Leave You".
Another listing has a DVD featuring two episodes to promote Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) for an Emmy. Longoria was the only from the main Housewives quartet one not to be nominated for an Emmy last year. There is also a print advertisement up for auction to plug Marcia Cross for an Emmy.
Last year, Housewives won six out of a potential of 11 Emmys, including one for Felicity Huffman for her role as Lynette Scavo. Full details of Housewives' 2005 nominations, wins and losses can be read here.
Nominations will announced on July 6, with voting then taking place until August 8. The 2006 Emmy Awards will then be held on August 27. Discuss this news item at Talk Desperate!
