James Denton (Mike Delfino) made headlines in Minnesota earlier this month by demonstrating he's not a fan of the usual trappings of stardom.
At the start of the month, Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist C.J. noted that some of her readers thought they'd seen Denton in the audience during a match involving the local football team, the Minnesota Vikings. That wasn't completely outside the real of possibility, as Denton's wife Erin actually hails from Shakopee, Minnesota. But C.J. was a bit more surprised when a few days later she received an email from someone claiming to be Denton, confirming his appearance at the game and ending with a heartfelt "Skol Vikings!"
"A couple of [family members] called me and said, 'you should let her know that was you,'" Denton told the columnist when she called him. "Then I thought I could send that e-mail just as easily as a publicist."
The Vikings ended up winning the game Denton attended, but that wasn't the only thing the Desperate Housewives stars enjoyed about the event. "Nobody spoke to me until 10 or 15 seconds left to go in the game," Denton said. "One little girl came over and at that point everybody who thought it might be me [was paying attention]. I probably spent 30 minutes talking to people. It was really fun. I was in town to visit my in-laws, the O'Briens in Shakopee, and 10 of us caught the game."
Denton said that one reason he decided to call the columnist was something she'd written in her first column about the star. "You mentioned how one of the things you knew about me was how I always talked about my wife," Denton said. "From the very beginning, I knew from this show, with this role and all the People magazine garbage, I thought, 'You know what? The quicker I put out there I'm married, I've got two kids, I'm an old guy -- leave me alone' [the better off I'd be.]"
