By Antony July 26, 2005 - 9:03 PMRichard Burgi, who starred in three episodes of season one as Karl Mayer, is the latest to sign on to be a full-time castmember.
The ex-husband of Susan Mayer and father of Julie Mayer will be a regular feature of season two, reported Coming Soon!, and he will immediately begin ruffling feathers when he becomes romantically involved with Susan's arch-nemesis Edie Britt. The news elaborates on the plot information recently revealed by creator Marc Cherry that Edie would begin a relationship in the second episode that would annoy Susan.
The relationship probably won't come as a surprise to Susan though, even if she is angry. Some of the groundwork was laid in episode eleven, "Move On", where Edie shared a lingering kiss with Karl under the pretence that she thought it was his birthday. Later in the episode, with Edie's arm draped around him, Karl revealed to Susan that he and Edie kissed one year under the mistletoe.
Burgi's other two appearances were at the beginning of the season in "Pretty Little Picture" and at the end of the season in "One Wonderful Day". Away from Desperate Housewives his work has included TV roles on 24 and short-lived Point Pleasant, and on the big screen he starred in Cellular.
Burgi joins a growing list of actors who have been added as main cast members for season two. Roger Bart (George Williams), Mehcad Brooks (Matthew Applewhite), Doug Savant (Tom Scavo) and Alfre Woodard (Betty Applewhite) are all joining the show's roster of series regulars this fall.
