By Antony March 26, 2005 - 1:34 AMAfter initially saying the DVD release of the first season of Desperate Housewives would have a cropped picture size, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced it will in fact be released in widescreen.
"We just received a phone call to let us know that the video transfer will be Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1)," reported TVShowsOnDVD.com. "That's all the information we have; we don't know whether the original press release was simply incorrect, or if a change was made due to the feedback from fans. A revised press release should be available later today or Monday."
Many fans were disturbed by the original news that the show was going to be released in a 4:3 format (story). 4:3 refers to the shape of the picture, meaning that it would be shaped like older-style televisions. To achieve this, episodes that were originally broadcast on ABC in widescreen would had to have had about a quarter of the image chopped off. This process is known as pan and scan.
Get Desperate! launched a petition against the move which hundreds of fans have signed. Numerous left comments too, many saying they wouldn't buy the DVDs unless they were in widescreen.
The DVD box set is available for pre-order from Amazon.com for $38.99.
