Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry has signed a four-year deal with ABC Television Studio (ATS), allowing the studio to retain his creative talents until at least 2011.
According to Variety the figure is believed to be in excess of $15 million. The deal means that if Cherry was to develop any new shows they will be offered to ATS first, but Cherry has indicated that he wants to remain focused on Housewives for the rest of its run.
Cherry indicated previously that he'd like it Housewives to run for seven seasons, to the deal neatly ensures he can remain at the helm for the show's planned duration. Variety also reported that the castmembers of Housewives have also signed new deals securing them for another four years. "I think that, at the end of my deal, and after seven seasons, it will be a good time to call it quits," said Cherry. "I don't want anyone else to run the show, and I don't want us to fade away."
President of ATS Mark Pedowitz was more cautious however, and unwilling to set an end date for the show. "Nobody's made any determinations that it will end after seven years," he said. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it." But he added that Cherry is an "enormous asset for this company" and said that it "would be silly to do something without Marc Cherry involved."
After Housewives Cherry said he wants to call it quits with TV. "I'm packing my bags, moving to New York, and I'm going to start writing books for Broadway musicals," he said. ATS may have other ideas though, and with the departure of Housewives from ABC schedules perhaps they'll dangle a carrot in front of Cherry to create another a smash hit for them in 2011 -- perhaps even the horror show that Cherry started to develop 18 months ago (story) that never saw the light of day.
