February 26, 2006 - 10:21 PMHello World! I really enjoyed my trip to Germany last weekend. It was good to get away for a few days, and go to somewhere completely different.
The thing that struck me most about Germany compared to the UK (apart from their great beer) was that they seemed more relaxed. They were happy to wait for the pedestrian light to go green before they crossed the road, whereas my friend and I were just dying to get across the road the second we saw a gap in the traffic. But the German person who was with us said it wasn't the done thing, and she waited patiently.
Meal times were also more relaxed. The service was atrocious at times, but often we were just left to eat and drink with no real pressure to pay or move along. There was an attitude of 'Enjoy the food and drink, then pay us later'.
I was also annoyed that shops were shut on Sunday. How dare they when they I had shopping to do? And my friend was just in disbelief that there was no sign of home delivery for groceries.
When home, I voiced my observations to an online German friend, saying that Germany seemed much more relaxed than the UK. He said: "The Germans say every other land is more relaxed, except the UK."
That doesn't surprise me... the Australians have a joke: "How do you know if a plane full of English tourists has landed? Because the engines have stopped, but the plane's still whining".
