Marc Cherry, creator and executive producer of Desperate Housewives, has said he's 100% committed to the show and will stay with it until it's finished. He also revealed spoilers for upcoming plots.
"I want it to run seven years," he told deseretnews.com. "And the moment seven years is past, I will personally take down the sets. That's how protective I am of this. I'm only going to have one major hit. I'm only going to catch lightning in a bottle once. I wish I had the energy to develop and write at the same time, but I don't. This is going to be on my tombstone. I'll be damned if I don't protect it."
He admitted that taking his eye off the ball led to problems last year, but said that criticism of the show "kind of really hurt me in a deep place. I took a little step back Season 2, because of exhaustion, a little bit. I don't think I was quite as present there. Things didn't go as well." He said he's also "learned some stuff" from season two, and that he was now "really proud" of season three.
Back at the reigns and looking to the future, he said Marcia Cross's (Bree Hodge) absence from the show while she's pregnant means we'll see more of Edie. "Nicollette [Sheridan]'s about to have a really fun time," he said. "Because with Marcia now on bed rest, she's going to be promoted and be front and center for the remainder of the season .She's going to have a fascinating romance with someone who already lives on the street, and we're going to be meeting her son that was mentioned in the pilot."
Meanwhile in a separate news item at New York Post it's been revealed that Susan and Ian are to marry. "A big, legendary soap-opera wedding, the kind that folks are hopefully going to tune in for," said Cherry.
He also revealed that it was Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) who suggested Rex Van De Kamp narrate an episode of Housewives. "[She] was the one who said to me at the end of season one, 'It's a shame now that Rex has died that he can't narrate,'" said Cherry. "I thought that was interesting. Steven Culp and I have kept in contact so I called him and he thought it was a fun idea."
