By Antony November 23, 2005 - 10:57 PMRoger Bart (George Williams) admitted recently that he was so shocked by his character's actions that it moved him to tears.
"Shooting my scenes, I hadn't really even known what I was putting in [Rex's] medicine," Bart told the Associated Press (via Yahoo!. "But after Steven Culp had shot his final scene, he called to tell me: 'Keep your mouth shut, but I'm dead. You did it!' Then, when it aired, I watched that episode, watching him in the hospital croaking his last breath, and I found myself moved almost to tears by his death. I was misting up and going, 'Who would do such a horrible thing?' And then I had to say, 'Wait a minute! I did it!'"
Bart explained that the biggest challenge for him has been to find balance with the character. "Nobody in their right mind would say, 'Hmmm, what a great guy,'" Bart said. "He's not your average sociopath. But I've tried to find things in him that a viewer can identify with. He's so—well, clumsy is a nice word for it. And besides that, I made the choice that he's very, very angry about something. People can relate to that. I've tried to maintain an uneasy balance between your friendly unassuming neighborhood pharmacist and Anthony Perkins in Psycho.
Bart said that it was on the second day of filming that Marc Cherry told him that George would stalk Bree. And for Bart, there was one moment in particular that set the stage for his character's story. "There was one scene early on where George is home alone, eating dinner and watching Bree on the surveillance video from the drug store," he recalled. "I think that's when America went, 'Uh-oh.'"
