Rumors began circulating today that producers are planning to kill off one of the desperate housewives.
According to ninemsn, The National Enquirer reported that there is a plan to "kill one of the five ladies" and that an "insider" at the show claimed Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) is the most likely to leave.
"Ever since the show premiered, there's been talk that one of the key characters would be killed off," said an alleged "source close to the series". "Show execs want a blockbuster plotline to woo bigger audiences and regain critical acclaim for the prime time hit. TV dramas like Dallas and Lost drew huge numbers when they hyped killing off a key cast member. As a result, after a recent meeting between writers and show execs, Marcia is being pegged as the girl most likely to go in May."
Back in September, Marc Cherry told USA TODAY that there would be a death in the show within the first 13 episodes of the season. However with episode 8 having been show, that would mean the death would have to occur within the next five episodes—or could refer to Gabrielle's unborn baby.
As with any show rumors treat, them with suspicion until they are officially confirmed—particularly one of this magnitude. Firing one of their Emmy-nominees would be an immense step for the show, and they could alienate viewers by killing off arguably their most popular character. If it is one of the "five" housewives then it could be Edie Britt who goes, as she's not part of the core-four, or if it's not one of the "five" then it could be newcomer Betty Applewhite.
And maybe there won't be a death in the family at all. According to Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Chuck Yarborough, when he called the DH offices for comment, it took quite a while before a spokesperson for the show stopped laughing and could issue a denial.
