James Denton (Mike Delfino) said recently that, with the mysteries of Mary Alice Young now revealed, the show will utilizing more humor in season two.
"We finished pretty darkly last year in having to tie up the murders," Denton told Newsweek. "This season starts funnier. I think the premiere is the funniest script I read. There's a lot of uncomfortable humor, in Rex's funeral, for example. Lynette is in the workplace. Tom is a stay-at home dad. Gabrielle is trying to get Carlos out of prison. We added Alfre Woodard [Betty Applewhite]."
Denton said that with the Mary Alice story wrapped up, the Applewhite story will take center stage. But he said that Mary Alice would still narrate the show. "She's not the same angelic presence when you found out she killed Diedre," he said. "At this point, they're not talking about her too much. They've moved on to [The Applewhite] family. It's a really dark, creepy story line."
Of course an actor can't be interviewed without the interviewer bringing up rumors of on-set tensions, so Denton gave his view on what may have given rise to the tabloid gossip. "I think we had some growing pains. With a cast that size, you have issues like your trailer size. Who gets which make-up artists, who wears what clothes, who has the most interesting story line. There's a lot of sorting out to be done. Anytime there was a conflict, I got the feeling that some of the press was really anxious to find a story there. The Vanity Fair thing was kind of a culmination of that."
