As season two comes to an end tomorrow in the US, the cast have spoken more openly about the problems of season two which have led critical opinion about the show to sour. But they struck a positive note too, along with creator Marc Cherry, talking with excitement about the season finale and season three.

James Denton (Mike Delfino) said he felt problems stemmed from the cast getting too large. "The cast got a little thick," he told USA TODAY, which revealed that at least six characters would leave in the season finale. "We had 19 regulars this year, even more than Lost, so there were a lot of characters to service." Dissatisfied with his lack of screen time, he also revealed that he offered to leave the show. "I had conversations about what their plan was for Mike to give them an out. I told them I'd be happy to go explore other things if they really weren't sure what to do with Mike."

For Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) a lack of timely scripts prevented her from achieve her best, and said her character lacked a good story arc this past season. "Marc has said it has been a giant problem from the beginning," she admitted. "They've sort of thrown some things up against the wall and tried to see if they'd stick, and they haven't. It is hard to invest in the arc of what you are trying to do with your work when you literally show up and there's no script to shoot." And Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) admitted that she's also been unhappy with her stories at times, and said she questioned the writers numerous times this season on their decisions, saying "You've got to be kidding."

In the season two finale, we'll be saying goodbye to the Applewhites who first appeared in the season one finale. In a separate article at USA TODAY, Mehcad Brooks (Matthew Applewhite) said he was disappointed with the lack of development for his on-screen family. "The show is called Desperate Housewives; it's not called The Applewhites, and Betty Applewhite wasn't quite incorporated. There was seniority and priority, and we were marginalized and completely segregated from every family except the Van De Kamps."

Brooks added that he expected more to be done with Alfre Woodard (Betty Applewhite) who, by the end of the season, was missing for multiple episodes at a time. "You have one of the greatest actresses of our time. ... I don't want to say that her talent was squandered, but a lot of people expected a lot more. And I'm one of those people."

Cherry acknowledged there were problems, but said the show—even when not at its best—was still better than many other shows and offered more "twists and turns in it than your average hour of TV", and he also promised a return to the greatness of season one. "We're going to focus on domestic drama at home. And I'm going to work much harder to criss-cross all the women's stories so that their lives bump up against each other."

The new energy will begin with this season's finale which Cherry dubbed "moving day" and said it would have flashbacks to show how the characters where when they moved on to Wisteria Lane, juxtaposed against their changing lives now. "All of these women will be leaving certain parts of their life behind and moving on," he said. Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) added that it would allow viewers "to experience the history and see what these characters were like before we first met them."

Doug Savant (Tom Scavo) thinks the show "will be back to being audacious".
