By Antony May 21, 2005 - 12:32 AMUK broadcaster five has announced it is going to air a documentary that features women with the same experiences and problems as that of the fictional Desperate Housewives characters.
"Hopefully it can inspire other women who are going through a bad time that they can get through it and enjoy themselves again," Caroline Monk—one of the women featured in the show—told Manchester Evening News.
"Like the characters, we have all got stories to tell. Nobody leads a perfect life and the program aims to show that by comparing our lifestyles to the characters."
Monk, an ex-model, has gone through a divorce, been burgled, learned to cope as a single parent and has built up a successful career as a model She even says that her 10-year old daughter offers her advice on dating, mirroring the character of Susan Mayer and her daughter. Another character, Debby Carr, is also a divorced single parent and is now a company director.
"I do not think of myself as a housewife and I am not desperate," said Carr. "The programme is about women of a certain age who juggle different aspects of their lives. I am a single mum so I can equate to Susan and I also an ex-model so I can relate to the character Gabrielle. We have all got baggage and deal with it in different ways but the show was a lot of fun."
Meanwhile in Dallas it seems a US-version of the show is being put together. According to a press release, "it is going to show the realism that the Desperate Housewives portray." Bravo meanwhile will be airing a six-part reality series premiering next year that gives insight into an affluent community in the Orange County.
The UK documentary is due to air next month on five. Although five is airing this program, it is competitor network Channel 4 that has the rights to the real Desperate Housewives. The show is being credited with helping Channel 4 reach record profits, according to Scotsman.com.
