By Christian May 20, 2005 - 9:26 PMMehcad Brooks (Matthew Applewhite) yesterday gave his first-ever interview about Desperate Housewives, in which the actor said he'd like to help to make the show even sexier than it already is.
"I hope it'll be Gabrielle, Susan, Edie, Lynette, Bree and that other lady [Felicia Tilman] who knows everything about what's what," Brooks told USA Today, after reporter William Keck asked him who he'd like to see Matthew get involved with. "They're all beautiful women, and Wisteria Lane needs a Don Juan."
If Matthew does go that route, it'll likely bring him into conflict with his mother, Betty. According to DH creator Marc Cherry, Matthew is a 21-year old "who is finally ready to break free from his very controlling, traditionalist mother. And there will be some sexual complications that this kid runs into on that street." For her part, the actress playing Matthew's mother, Alfre Woodard, sounded ready for the challenge. "I assume I'm going to have a lot of work kickboxing these women on Wisteria Lane to keep them away from him," she joked.
Marc Cherry briefly discussed why he picked Mehcad for the role of Matthew, revealing that one of the other two final candidates was actually Mehcad's very own brother. But Mehcad ended up winning the role because he displayed a "dangerous" quality. "Mehcad was the one who popped for us," Cherry said. "He has a combination of this wholesome, sweet quality and a dark, brooding quality."
Brooks sounded happy to have won the role, saying he felt right at home on the DH set, as it reminded him of the Texas neighborhood where he himself lived, as part of one of only a few black families in the street. "It's freaky how much my neighborhood was like Wisteria Lane," the actor said. For more on that, as well as on a tragic indident that befell Brooks during his youth, and some new biographical information on the actor, head over to the full USA Today article.
