Desperate Housewives picked up another two Emmys last night, with Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) taking home the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series award.
Huffman was up against Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) and Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), but despite Hatcher being a bookies favorite to win it was Huffman's portrayal of weary mother-of-four Lynette that appealed to the Emmy judges. "I've turned into one of those actresses and I'm sorry," Huffman said, choking up as she collected her award, reported ABC News. Huffman paid tribute to her colleagues on the show after beating two of her co-stars. "A win for one is a win for all," she said. Huffman also saw off formidable competition from five-time nominated Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) and six-times nominated and twice-winner Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond).
Housewives took a second gong on the evening thanks to Charles McDougall, who won the Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series Emmy for directing Pilot". He saw off competition from the directors of Entourage, Everybody Loves Raymond, Monk and Will & Grace. McDougall received a nomination in this category back in 2001 for an episode of Sex and the City, but Desperate Housewives brought him his first win.
It wasn't all success though, as Desperate Housewives was shunned in the categories relating to the show's writing. Creator Marc Cherry was nominated for the Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series award for his work on "Pilot", however sophomoric Arrested Development—which received three nominations in this category—grabbed the award for the second year running.
When it came to Outstanding Comedy Series, Housewives was once again left out in the cold. Everybody Loves Raymond, which ended this year after nine seasons, took home the award for the first and final time after its seventh nomination. "It was a shock to win," said Raymond star Ray Romano told reporters. "I know you hear that all the time. But, even you guys have to admit you thought Desperate Housewives was winning. So it was a shock." Raymond also saw off first-time nominee Scrubs, and previous winners Arrested Development and Will & Grace.
There was some debate over whether Desperate Housewives should have been classed as a comedy or drama, but the move to class it as a comedy paid of. With it competing against comedies, it left Lost to compete as a drama and for ABC to scoop up more awards in total. Lost won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, while J.J. Abrams won the Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series for "Pilot (Part 1 & Part 2)". Boston Legal also won two awards, with William Shatner winnning the Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series award and James Spader grabbing the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series Emmy.
HBO's The Life and Death of Peter Sellers won most awards over both Emmy nights, with nine in total. Desperate Housewives and Lost were joint second with six apiece. HBO was once again the overall winner with a total of 27 awards. ABC was the top network, with its 16 Emmys beating CBS's 11, NBC's 10 and Fox's 6.
