Lesley Ann Warren People Guide Hello World! So, Anita Roddick sold you to L'Oreal. Who'd have thunk it.
Cliched joke time: why did she do it? Because she's worth it. Obviously.
I really do hate the increase of big business... companies gobbling up other companies, stifling choice and just becoming these money-obsessed machines. It's sad to see another company fall prey to takeover-syndrome.
Anita Roddick and the other owners of Body Shop were pretty rich anyway by all accounts. I'm not gullible... all the good intentions are fine, but it was still a vehicle to make its owners some money. But fine, at least the Body Shop did stand for something.
But what it proves is that everyone has their price. A lot of shops, plenty of money, and a hatred of big business... it still wasn't enough to stop a massive payout looking tempting. The sad thing is that everyone who has actually spent at the Body Shop has basically had the finger stuck up to them.
If you are someone who really believes in consumer-responsibility, I guess it's time to go find the new Body Shop of the 21st century, not the Body Shop that has been bolted on to L'Oreal. But finding individual companies with ethics is becoming pretty hard these days.
I was amused by how Roddick defended the move, talk about justification: "The campaigning, the being maverick, changing the rules of business—it's all there, protected. And it's not going to change. That's part of our DNA. But having L'Oreal come in and say we like you, we like your ethics, we want to be part of you, we want you to teach us things—it's a gift. I'm ecstatic about it. So I don't see it as selling out."
Funny. I thought ethics was about a way of operating, not something to be bought. Talk Desperate! threads Chat with other fans at Talk Desperate! Poll Results Below are the results of the most recent Get Desperate! poll:
