The second season of Desperate Housewives was, at least certainly amongst the TV critics, not very popular. But two early reviews of the season three premiere indicate that the show could once again win the hearts of reviewers.
"The opening sequence of its third-season premiere is pure, perfect Desperate Housewives," wrote Ed Martin for New York Post. "Everything feels right as the late Mary Alice begins her familiar narration of the tale unfolding before us, once again enhancing the drama at hand after seeming like an otherworldly outsider last season."
In particular, Martin noted a good level of humor not all of politically correct. "The opening scene at the Hodge home makes clear that series creator Marc Cherry and new executive producer Jeff Greenstein intend to restore the unique tone of the show, the first few minutes of the present-day storytelling suggest that they are going to make it funny again, too." Martin then recounted a scene between Gabrielle and iao-Mei, where Gabrielle says: "I can't wait for you to pop out that baby, because when you do I am putting you on the first plane back to Shanghai and you're going to be on all fours in a rice paddy before the epidural wears off."
Richard Huf at New York Daily News said that Marc Cherry proves he has kept his promise to restore the show to its glory days. "The streamlined show returns September 24, six months after viewers last saw the gang immersed in an apparent murder (viewers won't know for sure), new mysteries, new relationships and seemingly happy moments sunk by newly disclosed relationships."
Of course after a hiatus shows often come back with renewed energy, and the test will be if it can maintain momentum throughout the season. But with a new executive producer, and without the burden of the constantly-criticized Applewhite story, season three could perhaps win over reviewers on a regular basis.
US viewers will get the chance to judge the season premiere themselves on September 24 2006. Discuss this news item at Talk Desperate!
