Marcia Cross People Guide,
Marc Cherry People Guide Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry and Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) have spoken about Andrew Van De Kamp's gay storyline, and what's in store for Bree's troubled son.
"My daughter's a slut, my husband's a pervert and my son's gay—perfect!" was her first reaction to when she found out about Andrew, Cross told USA Today. However Cross, who has a gay uncle, does not take offence after "watching my parents accepting [homosexuality] into the family. Eventually, it just becomes OK."
Cross does, however, understand why Bree will have a hard time. "If you take it from Bree's point of view, you can understand why she would fight to save him," she said. "[She fears] she won't be with him in heaven. It's very complex. I know she loves him no matter what, but it will take some time to change her deep-instilled beliefs. Maybe this is all a lesson in tolerance."
However, Andrew will not be a another TV tale of coming to terms with being gay and gaining acceptance. Creator Marc Cherry told USA Today that Andrew will go a "a far darker place" and use his sexuality as a way to hurt Bree. Saying he shouldn't be taken as a role model, Cherry explained that "what he'll do in the fall to get back at his mother is so unpleasant."
Shawn Pyfrom, who plays the trouble Andrew, agreed. "This story shows [gay youths] what not to do," he said.
