Felicity Huffman People Guide,
Marc Cherry People Guide Desperate Housewives won the Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy on television, and although none of the actresses took home the acting award for the category in which four were nominated, Felicity Huffman (Lynette) won the lead actress award for a dramatic film role, defeating previous Academy Award winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, published a complete list of nominees and winners after the telecast last night. The 63rd annual Golden Globes were broadcast by NBC. The members gave most of their accolades to Brokeback Mountain, which won Best Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Walk the Line, which won Best Comedy or Musical and top acting honors for stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.
Yahoo! focused on the television awards, which generate less publicity than the film trophies that are often predictors of the upcoming Academy Awards. "'Desperate Housewives' had the last laugh Monday as the ABC hit took home its second consecutive Golden Globe trophy for best comedy series," declared the article, which also noted ABC's win in the drama category for Emmy winner Lost.
All four original lead housewives - Huffman, Marcia Cross (Bree), Teri Hatcher (Susan) and Eva Longoria (Gabrielle) - were nominated for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy, but the award went to Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker, who joked to The Hollywood Reporter that on her show, she, too, plays a desperate housewife.
Huffman, who won an Emmy for her Desperate Housewives role last year, told The Hollywood Reporter that she was delighted the show had won in addition to her individual triumph for the film Transamerica, in which she plays a man in the process of gender reassignment. "I love that the show won," she said. "I have the best job in the world. And the fact the that 'Transamerica' is liked is fantastic." To play her transgendered character, she explained, "I tried to learn femininity as a foreign language...we worked a gazillion hours with like two hours off, so I didn't have a chance to figure out if I took it home with me or not."
Series creator Marc Cherry said that he spent little time backstage because he and Hatcher had been congratulating Huffman. "We went running back to support Felicity," he explained. Upcoming on the show, he added, "We're setting the wheels in motion and building to some great stuff." Cherry had suspected that due to publicity and momentum, one of the other shows would win this year.
Concurred Hatcher, "I leaned over to my girlfriend and said, 'Oh, we're so not winning this.' Not because I didn't believe in the show; I just felt the energy in other shows, so it was really surprising." Both said that they were delighted for Huffman. Rumours of on-set jealousy had surfaced after Huffman won her Desperate Housewives Emmy, but Hatcher denied the allegations; Softpedia reported that she said she was thrilled for her co-star.
