By Antony May 16, 2007 - 7:53 PMDisney has made the unusual decision to create another version of Desperate Housewives for the US market, this time aimed at Hispanic viewers.
According to Variety Spanish-language broadcaster Univision has signed a deal with Disney-ABC Intl. Television Latin America to create Amas de Casas Desesperadas for the US market. While creating localized versions is nothing new for a successful TV show, and this has already happened for Housewives in many countries, it is unusual that an alternative language version will be created for viewers residing in the US.
The production company will hire high-profile Latin American and US Hispanic actors, and is set to begin production in July. "We are tapping a current TV phenomenon, which is among the top series in 200 countries worldwide," said Diego Lerner, president and managing director of Disney Latin America. The storylines will apparantly follow the original US version closley, with story tweaks as necessary to cater for cultural differences.
The original Housewives is already broadcast with Spanish dubbing for Hispanic viewers in the US, and this further cements Disney's dedication to the Hispanic market. Its local versions in other countries including include a version in Argentina that is entering its second season, as well as Brazilian and combined Colombian/Ecuadorian versions.
