Talking about his marriage to actress Laura Leighton, Doug Savant (Tom Scavo) said it is important that their sense of partnership extends to their professional lives too.
"We are each other's biggest fans," he told Backstage. "I don't think a relationship between actors can work unless there are two things: great respect and a sense that there is no competition—that her success is not your failure and that you celebrate it and you're in that other person's corner."
Savant likened their marriage to boxing. But no, not that they punch each other. "We alternate," he said. "If it's a fight metaphor, she's in the ring, then I'm her corner man. And if it's my turn to take that round, she's in mine." But he ruled out getting in the ring at the same time, as it were, and starring in a show together. "There's a cheese factor when couples work together."
Savant's life off-screen also has similarities to that of Tom's. "There have been many times where Laura is off working and I have been the guy at home, so she's the breadwinner and I'm taking care of the kids," he said. "Right now we have a new baby at home, and Laura has [handled] the bulk of that while I've been out working. It's a thoroughly modern relationship, where it's all hands on deck and you do whatever it takes."
