Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) said in a recent interview that she's not like her character, but she can understand why she is like what she is and why people can relate to her.
"I'm not like Bree at all," Cross told The Sunday Times' Style magazine. "I'm actually fairly low-key and casual. But yes, as an actress in LA, I identify with her need to present a good front all the time. It's not just actresses, either. I think all women are taught from a young age to fit into this box."
Cross said there are who are like Bree in real life, and she understands why they are like that. "[Bree] hides behind the domestic stuff and being perfectly coiffed. She diverts her feelings into obsessive behaviour and trying to control her exterior world," she said. "Are there women as extreme as Bree out there? Absolutely. And they reveal themselves to me more and more—or their husbands do. There are a lot of women trying to be the perfect everything and trying to hide what they perceive to be their failures."
Cross admitted that at one point she found it hard to understand why Bree was popular. "When people come up to me and say, 'You're my favorite Housewife', my response is, 'Why?'". I thought she was the least likeable and the hardest to sell. She's such an odd duck in so many ways. It's hard because sometimes you just want to have fun." But she said she's learnt to love her character. "She's having to let down her defences. I personally love someone when they are falling apart, and I guess I am loving her more and more."
Tonight Cross goes up against fellow co-stars Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) and Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) for a Golden Globe. Hatcher women last year, but Huffman won an Emmy last year. They are up against Weeds' Mary Louise Parker.
