Teri Hatcher People Guide,
Marcia Cross People Guide Is Desperate Housewives a drama or is it a comedy? It's a question that's been pondered before, but for some Emmy nominees the answer is all to clear.
"That show is not a comedy," said Bill Lawrence, executive producer of Scrubs, which has been nominated for the first time in the Outstanding Comedy Series category only to be up against the seemingly unstoppable Desperate Housewives. "I don't find that show as funny as The West Wing," he told Reuters (via Yahoo! News). "I find Desperate Housewives to be a great late-night soap, and it's going to crush in the comedy Emmys as an hour long show that's not a comedy, and it's not that fair."
Desperate Housewives executive producer Tom Spezialy admitted that even the show's producers aren't sure how to define their show. "We don't know what we are," he said. "I think we're funny. We strive to be funny." But he denied they went for the comedy category just because there was less competition as shows like Friends have finished. "I wish we could say we were that shrewd. We just thought it was funny. I can't say that we plotted to win the Emmy nod in that way."
Meanwhile, Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) and Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) have commented on their nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series category. "This category is full of amazing people who have delivered amazing work for a long time," Hatcher told The Hollywood Reporter. "I'm honored just to be in that group." Cross was also delighted. "Life just keeps getting better and better and better," she said.
