Ricardo Antonio Chavira has said that he gets feedback on his roles from the Hispanic community, but he's not bothered by negative comments about his characters.
"My thing is, just as long as it's not gratuitous, if it fits into the scheme of the story line, I'm fine," he told TV Guide Online.
Chavira said that his on-screen wife Gabrielle's affair with the gardener has got people talking – and even offering advice. "Latin women are like, 'Shame on Gabrielle for doing what she's doing. She doesn't know what she's missing!' The men are all, 'Hey, you know your wife's sleeping with your gardener?' And I'm like, 'No s--t, guys.'"
But it's not just Desperate Housewives that has stirred up opinion. The actor admitted that a previous role in Six Feet Under, when his character turned out to be gay, raised a lot of comments. "You should have seen the reaction of the Latino community in my hometown of San Antonio to that one!" he said. "Especially the men — they were not happy."
