By Antony January 15, 2006 - 10:41 PMHello World! There are two topics that I like to complain about: the BBC and George Galloway. When the two meet, I have a field day. And they often do meet.
George Galloway, who has become an anti-war figurehead, is a favorite of the BBC. They want to spread their views, so they use him. Think of it as opinion by proxy. For example an interview with a member of the government recently was just loaded with Galloway comments. 36% of the article was dedicated to the government member they were interviewing, yet Galloway (who is just one MP, the only MP in his party) received 55% of the coverage in the article. Why?
So now Galloway has put himself on Celebrity Big Brother, and the BBC is doing its part at giving virtually unchallenged PR to Galloway. Like this gushing article, where they print Galloway's spokesman's comments unchallenged. "Mr Galloway: 'Coming across as human'" they put under a nice photo of him, and the only "balance" is mention of one website that is campaigning for Galloway's return parliament. Real hard hitting journalism.
What annoys me more than anything is how the BBC has twisted and diluted what Galloway has done. Putting aside his tea parties with Saddam Hussein and praise of the Iraqi insurgents as "martyrs", he was expelled from the Labour party for many reasons including inciting British troops to disobey orders.
The average Joe in the street would frown very much about this, it's virtually treason. But they probably wouldn't mind if he just gave Tony Blair some hell though, so the BBC gradually shifts what he did. Inciting troops to disobey orders became "anti-war" views, and now in a being reported as something like "arguing with Tony Blair". The words have been removed, since I complained, so they do listen occasionally. But they still used the opportunity to print his latest rant at Blair.
I know many news sources are hated, Fox News seems to have quite a lot of people who dislike it. But with Fox News, you can turn it off. We in the UK are forced to pay for the BBC, forced for it two twist and mis-report news in matters like this. They also don't have a body that regulates them. Whereas other TV has an independent body, the BBC gets to regulate itself. And these things bother me immensely. And as long as they continue to be a PR machine for the likes of Galloway, who I find utterly distasteful, I will continue to see them as an unjust tax.
