By Antony August 15, 2005 - 12:53 AMHello World! There's good marketing and there's bad marketing. Sadly, there's way too much bad marketing.
I hate marketing that is touchy feely and that wants to be my friend, or marketing that thinks it's funny when it's not.
I will forever remember the marketing claptrap that came out at the launch of UK G2, a channel here in the UK targeted at my age group. At the time of launch the creative director had this to about the idents (the little appear before TV programs): "These ideas are acutely observed snapshots with a twist of the unexpected and convey attitudinal independence and a devil may care sense of fun and drama. They are original and intelligent, and are unmistakably UK G2 through and through."
She was referring to clips that included a fake shootout in an office. "A colleague walking past, with a stack of photocopying, is caught in the imaginary crossfire. Joining in, he takes a mock fall, sheets of paper flung into the air," the press release enthused.
Aside from not being original, and a copy of TV advert, I couldn't help but sit there and wonder what planet she was on. I really can't remember the last time I thought "Wow, I really must watch that TV station... it really reflects my attudinal independence and devil my care sense of fun." Who uses the term attudinal independence for crying out loud? (Not many, there's 44 results in Google.)
It's so sad to think of these suited people sitting around a table laughing at their jokes when really they are not funny, and they not in touch with the average person. Then again I'm not average, maybe most people loved it.
But I do like the odd gem that does come along, like Mini's latest campaign. Check out their Make Sure It's a Mini Adventure website. It certainly appeals to my sense of humor, plus the website proves you can be non-static yet also usable. Something that so many website creators just don't understand anymore.
But the website is about looking out for fake Minis. I particularly liked how to stop a Horse posing a mini: "makes clip-clop sound when accelerating". Talk Desperate! threads Chat with other fans at Talk Desperate! Poll Results Below are the results of the most recent Get Desperate! poll:
