Shawn Pyfrom (Andrew Van De Kamp) may not play the nicest character on Wisteria Lane, but he said his role still receives approval from fans as it breaks the stereotype of gay characters on television.
"Playing a gay character on TV, there are these expectations from the gay community that you have to uphold and I hope that I have done that and I haven't upset them in anyway," he told AAP via Yahoo!7 News. "I have got a great response from them in the most part."
The "great response" is thanks, in part, to him being different from the usual gay characters seen on TV. "Andrew is a great gay character who isn't your typical gay character," Pyfrom said. "He is not that weak cliche character who is always getting picked on and always talking about clothes and men. He is a very strong person. He is comfortable with who he is and he has a take it or leave it attitude."
He said the character was a joy to play. "I get to be this evil character every week," he said. "It's great because I get all my anger out. I just go to set and be evil. Everyone has those feelings to a very minor level inside them and I just find those feelings and embrace them, intensify them and just go with it."
