Teri Hatcher People Guide,
Eva Longoria People Guide The by-now-infamous Vanity Fair cover story on Desperate Housewives has been posted on the internet, revealing that none of the stars of the series is fond of the designation "soap opera" and that they all have different approaches for dealing with the sudden fame they each received from their work on the series.
In scans posted at The Eva Longoria Fan Galleries, the five actresses and several of the actors from Desperate Housewives can be seen in sexy spring fashions, cavorting on the show's sets. As previously reported, the magazine photo shoot allegedly led to angry words between several of the stars, and the article reflects tensions about the order in which the actresses' names and photographs would appear in print.
Teri Hatcher (Susan) said that she doesn't like soap opera label but "I'm not bothered by much these days." The article called her the show's "star among stars" and related a story of Hatcher's that when a charity lunch with her was auctioned off last year, it went for $20,000, while this year, the top bid was $125,000. All the positive energy that her publicity has generated, added Hatcher, has made her wish "to really give back."
"I've never heard Teri be anything but grateful," noted James Denton (Mike), who also professed no envy. "The guys are smart enough to know what the show is about...it's not called Desperate Plumbers," he said. "We're just happy to be here."
Hatcher explained that her previous fame from Lois and Clark had made her familiar with fans approaching to ask for photos and autographs. But after recent episodes of Desperate Housewives she continued, "People were coming up to me, mostly women...they wanted to sit with me and tell me how I've inspired them." She said that she's been told that she gives new hope to women over 40.
Felicity Huffman (Lynette), whom the magazine called the actress with the most "chops" due to her extensive work with acclaimed playwright David Mamet, preferred to label the show a black comedy rather than a soap opera. Because she is known as a serious actress with little interest in the status and perks of being a television star, directors and executive producer Mark Cherry listen to her suggestions.
Huffman said that she was enjoying the show's success, but added that American society likes to create superstars only to destroy them. "Particularly women," she continued. "Particularly actresses. Remember Darryl Hannah? Remember Geena Davis? They just built them up to iconic stature and then ripped them down."
Reports have stated that Marcia Cross (Bree) was the most temperamental actress during the Vanity Fair photo shoot, but the writer called her warmer than her character and noted that she had become a practicing clinical psychiatrist when her acting career was in a slump.
As for Eva Longoria (Gabrielle), she was called the "class clown" by the magazine, and said that because she never had a hit show, all the excitement of fame is new to her: "There might be more pressure for [the others] as their 'comeback' from their 'has-been' days."
