By Antony August 13, 2005 - 11:58 AMDesperate Housewives' worldwide domination is continuing, with strong ratings and another territory under its belt.
According to FairfaxDigital, the season finale received 2.29m viewers, down 200,000 from those that watched the series premiere However it still makes the finale the 39th most-watched program of the decade. The series premiere ranked 23rd. ABC lead-out show Grey's Anatomy now takes Desperate Housewives' slot on Channel Seven.
Meanwhile Variety reports that China is one of the latest territories to receive Desperate Housewives. Dubbed into Mandarin, it will air on Jiayi. The show may face cuts to remove what is considered indecent, and will also face pressure from the prolific pirate DVD market. RedNova meanwhile reports that Showtime has picked up the series for the Middle-Eat and North Africa. Desperate Housewives' total coverage now spans 150 terrritories worldwide raking in over $1m an episode.
Finally, Desperate Housewives' massive rating success for Channel 4 in the UK suddenly looks less impressive! According to Manchester Online after a high-profile, and sometimes strange, advertising campaign, Channel 4 was rewarded with 6m viewers for the pilot of Lost. Sandwiched between a Big Brother 2005 eviction, the episode beat the 4.6m that tuned in to watch the premiere of Desperate Housewives. It is a reversal of the US ratings where Lost ranks below Desperate Housewives.
