By Antony June 13, 2005 - 5:55 PMAfter successful domination of worldwide markets with the original Desperate Housewives, Disney is now moving on to localized versions for Latin America.
"US sitcoms have declined in Latin America, so I see this as a way of getting us back in on primetime television out there," Fernando Barbosa, at Disney's Buena Vista International TV Latin America, told Variety. According to the site, the TV unit is in "advanced talks" to bring localized versions to Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Chile and Argentina. Colombia or Ecuador could also join the fray.
If the versions go ahead, the plan would be for all of them to be shot in Buenos Aires with one local producer. All the casts will fly in to the one location, and all scripts will be tweaked to fit with the language of each country. However, there is a condition of the deal. "We will license the remake rights under the condition that they air the original first," said Barbosa.
The original Desperate Housewives is currently aired by cable network Sony Entertainment Television in the region, and by Mexico's TV Azteca. This is Buena Vista's first attempt at localization, following the lead from Sony which has successfully launched local version of shows such as Who's the Boss.
