December 12, 2005 - 8:51 PMHello World! My internet connection died yesterday, so this Site Column is a day late. I bet you were all mortified that you didn't get my weekly dose of interesting words. Or not.
Things are a little bit interesting right now, as I'm very close to the oil terminal fire. You may have seen it in the news... I know it's even on news services beyond the UK, but of course the UK is giving it most coverage as it's at home.
I live in a nearby town, and work just a few minutes away from the fire. I know some people have been evacuated, and some roads are closed, so there is disruption. Buildings have also been damaged, and special mention has to be given to the emergency services which are no doubt doing a tremendous job. But otherwise, life is going on as normal in the town. It's certainly not a case of it rattling "nerves in a country still jittery over terrorism" as Fox News put it, laying on the hyperbole.
No in fact for most people, it was just selfish time as they all rushed off to panic buy fuel. There was not going to be a problem with fuel supplies, officials said, but it didn't stop people causing the very fuel shortage they were worried about. I had an empty tank and needed the fuel, and thankfully I got in just in time because people had moved from unleaded and were now gobbling up the Shell Optimax (aka V-Power to some readers) that my car needed instead.
