By Antony June 12, 2005 - 5:26 PMABC has started its Emmy campaign by putting its shows up for nomination, and kicking the marketing machine into gear with DVDs and posters.
According to GoldDerby, ABC has put Desperate Housewives' writing up for nomination in two categories. In the Comedy Series category it has submitted the "Pilot" and "Anything You Can Do episodes, and for the Comedy Writing category it submitted the pilot again as well as "One Wonderful Day". In "Anything You Can Do", Susan is jealous of Mike's new friend, Lynette is growing addicted to ADD medication and the Van De Kamp children mutiny when Rex moves out. In "One Wonderful Day", the season finale, the mystery of Mary Alice Young is finally revealed, and there's another death in Wisteria Lane.
Desperate Housewives' castmembers are also up for nomination in a number of categories. For Comedy Lead Actress, Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp), Teri Hatcher (Bree Van De Kamp), Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) and Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) have all been put forward. For best Comedy Supporting Actor, many of the castmembers are up for nomination: Ricardo Antonio Chavira (Carlos Solis), Steven Culp (Rex Van De Kamp), James Denton (Mike Delfino), Cody Kasch (Zach Young), Jesse Metcalfe (John Rowland), Mark Moses (Paul Young) and Doug Savant (Tom Scavo). And for best Comedy Supporting Actress, Andrea Bowen (Julie Mayer), Nicolette Sheridan (Edie Britt) and Brenda Strong (Mary Alice Young) have been put forward by ABC.
To help its potential nominees, ABC has started promoting its choices through DVDs and advertisements in the press, all of which are already available to purchase on eBay. A picture of the DVD, which contains "Pilot" and "Anything You Can Do" as well as episodes of Lost, can be seen above right. Here are two of the various advertisements for castmembers, these ones promoting Huffman and Longoria:
The Hollywood Reporter has commented on the shows up for nomination and said year "stands to be a true changing of the guard in the Primetime Emmy Awards comedy categories", with many shows like Frasier and Friends now out of the picture. The site says that by putting Desperate Housewives up for comedy, rather than drama where it'd have a tougher time, the show stands a better chance of winning.
The nomination process will end on June 22, with the nominees being announced on July 14. Only then will the voting process begin to select a winner for each category, with the winners announced on September 18.
