By Antony February 11, 2006 - 11:01 AMWhether they're hanging around the house, or out on a dinner date, each of the housewives has to have a wardrobe that suits their character. This job falls to Desperate Housewives costume designer Cate Adair, who gave some insight into her decisions.
As a customer designer, it's not the stories that dictate costumes so much as it is what the characters are like. "It's surprisingly delineated because we know their world, we know their challenges," she told Variety. Take pink, for example. "Gabriella would wear hot pink. Lynette would wear a pink pastel or a pink rose color. Susan wears a dustier pink color. They might all wear pink, but the tone varies."
Occasionally Adair gets the buzz of a last-minute costume change. In one recent episode, Adair and Nicollette Sheridan (Edie Britt) decided Edie should be in a polka dot dress. "I raced back to my office and came back with a sketch pad and some fabric, which she loved. I made a few sketches and went back, and just over 24 hours later she had the dress. It doesn't happen as often as I would like, but it's very rewarding when it does."
Las year Adair and costume supervisors Karo Vartanian and Joyce Unruh Goodwin were nominated for an Emmy for 'Outstanding Costumes For A Series', but Desperate Housewives lost out to Deadwood.
