By Antony July 10, 2005 - 7:19 PMHarriet Sansom Harris (Felicia Tilman) is continuing to promote her return to the stage in The Dining Room.
Sansom Harris told the Boston Herald that she can relate to the repressed world depicted in the play, which runs until July 16 at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis. "In my family it was, you know, keep a lid on it until you want to take a hacksaw to someone," she said.
She explained how she saw the production, and how it relates to life today. "For me, the play is about how the dining room has devolved to become a useless appendage," she said. "It's the room that everyone was going to do over, because who eats in the dining room anymore? But what makes it interesting to do today 20 years after it was written is that people are now trying to get back to this dining room. That there are so many valuable things that happen around the dining room table, even if it is populated by friends instead of family."
She was then asked if she was recognized more often after starring in Desperate Housewives. "People do recognize me from the show," she explained, "but I look like a lot of people, so I'm often mistaken for someone else, like Cherry Jones. And that's fine."
