With the Desperate Housewives season finale fresh behind her, Brenda Strong (Mary Alice Young) recently headed out to East Tennessee to work on the sequel to the Mormon film Work and Glory.
"You know it's really as an actor, [...] you want diversity," Strong told the Tennessee-based TV station WATE, when asked what it was like to be able to do more than just a voiceover again. "You want to be able to play different roles that kind of use different parts of your instrument and being that Mary Alice has been quite disembodied for awhile, it's nice to be in a body. In fact, when I went back last week to film the finale of Desperate Housewives, I was talking to [Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo)] and she said, 'Oh you must be so happy to be on screen.' Yes."
The original The Work and the Glory film was one of final projects Strong worked on before joining the cast of Desperate Housewives. Strong played the part of Mary Ann Steed, the mother of a family that in the 1830s moved to upstate New York and ended up hiring Joseph Smith to work on their land -- the man who would later go on to found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. The film was targeted almost exclusively at Mormons, but did apparently strike a chord with this group, and thanks to its modest budget ended up being profitable enough to warrant a sequel. It is not yet known when The Work and the Glory 2 will be released.
Besides this film, Brenda Strong also briefly talked about the Desperate Housewives season finale, "One Wonderful Day," although she refused to provide any spoilers. "It kind of leads you down a path and gives you a detour," she said. "So hopefully, you'll be surprised. I was surprised. And the majority of my cast mates will be surprised because we've been getting mystery pages. So even now when I'm looping the show, there are certain scenes I didn't get in my script I'm now getting to see and I'm going oh wow, that's so cool. I never would've guessed that."
