Marc Cherry People Guide,
Marcia Cross People Guide Marc Cherry openly admits in interviews that the character of Bree Van De Kamp was based upon his mother. But Cherry recently revealed that actress Marcia Cross was so much like his mother he didn't want to give her the role.
"I wasn't sure about Marcia," Cherry said at the Museum of Television and Radio's tribute event to Desperate Housewives (via contactmusic.com). "She was perfect, [but] I think she was too much like my mother. I think that scared me."
But Cherry said that he's glad he got over his worries and cast Cross in the role. "I have to say that when we initially got it all worked out and Marcia came aboard, it was like I think the second day of shooting, 'I was like, 'Oh, I'm stupid!'"
However, Cherry's mother still doesn't even realise that Bree is based upon her (via U Redlands). "She says to me, 'Oh, that interesting Bree character, in her pearls,'" said Cherry. "I say, 'Mom, you're wearing pearls right now.' There's a little bit of a disconnect. My mom doesn't get it yet."
