Online reviewers have weighed in on the first Desperate Housewives episode of 2006.

Here's what they had to say about "One More Kiss":

  • Michael Slezak reviewing for EW.com kicked off the year with new year's resolutions he'd like to see the Desperate Housewives writers take up, including one to "shake up the show's format every once in a while":

When we first saw Housewives back in October 2004, it was like finding a lush oasis in a desert full of dry crime procedurals and bland family sitcoms. But 34 episodes in, Housewives is as guilty as any series of following a formula. You know the drill: Mary Alice kicks things off with that singsongy voice-over (the one you only half listen to because it no longer advances the plot or gives you a deeper understanding of the characters). The action jumps from Susan to Bree to Lynette to Gabrielle until it comes to a screeching halt with Betty. You get a zinger from Edie, maybe one scene of the Housewives together, and then... cue Mary Alice to wrap things up.

You can read his full analysis over at EW.com.

  • But Dave Anderson at TV Guide Online said he enjoyed the kissing theme that was spun by Mary Alice in the episode. "While I wouldn't call it the best [of the season], I'd certainly say it was one of the best. I loved how this kissing-themed hour involved just about every character, and I especially loved how it intertwined characters with other characters that normally wouldn't be in a scene together. Although I thought the whole Gabrielle-kissing-Tom thing was just silly, I liked how it gave Gabi a reason to interact with Tom and Carlos a reason to have a scene with Lynette."

  • Sarah Gilbert at TV Squad enjoyed the Gabrielle/Lynette tension, even if she was frustrated by Lynette, but wasn't complimentary about the Applewhite story. "Not so much fun, however: the continuing Applewhite saga. I stand by my position that this actor who's now appearing as Caleb is just terrible in the role. They might as well have just picked a white guy. What an awful move by the casting director. When he pretends to be slow I just have to laugh. It's so unconvincing. It is a little bit funny when they find him in the kitchen eating ice cream and he says, 'it's not my fault!' that the mystery assassin is dead."

  • RT at Desperate for Desperate Housewives felt the episode answered a lot of complaints from the show's critics:

Those who moaned and groaned that the housewives weren't spending enough time together got plenty of screentime between the women, with Gabrielle and Lynette spending the most time together. Anyone who wanted more of Nicollette Sheridan than one or two barbs an episode got that last night for Edie. People tired of Susan's excesses found a surprisingly down-to-earth Susan; her plan to bring Mike and Zach together was touching, well-meaning, and surprisingly effective, if you discount Paul and Mike's fight. People who want the show to intertwine plots and characters were also rewarded with Karl helping Bree, Gabrielle and Lynette switching partners for a bit, and the stuff with Mike and Karl leading to the discovery of Monroe's body. And the Applewhite mystery not only pressed forward, it also brought the women together in a conversation reminiscent of their discussions of Mary Alice's mystery last year.
