In an interview in her native Oregon, Brenda Strong (Mary Alice Young) talked about her ghostly voiceover work and how her character poses a unique challenge.
"Mary Alice has to tell a 360º story with one instrument, and that's her voice," she told KATU 2. "And so I've tried to, obviously, infuse the voice with as much layeredness as possible from humor to irony to spirituality, because she's disembodied in a way."
Recalling the first season, Strong explained her enthusiasm for each new episode. "I have to say during the first season I would get a script and I couldn't get through it fast enough, I would be on a rollercoaster ride laughing and crying and like 'Oh my god, how did they think of this, this is brilliant?!'"
But can the writers keep it up? Strong said she believes they can. "We did come out of the box very very fast, and certainly the momentum that the writers were moving these characters along, you would think 'Wow, can they sustain this?' But Marc Cherry's a very smart man, who created this show, and he created characters of depth."
And with the Applewhites providing the main mystery for season two, Strong said the story will heat up in the future and live up to what fans expect. "[Betty's] storyline is going to be as compelling as Mary Alice's and it's starting to open up, and the audience is going to be really really happy to see where that goes."
