In an interview to promote Transamerica, Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) revealed that she thought she was going to be fired from Desperate Housewives soon after she started on the show.
She had just four days gap between playing the transsexual Bree in Transamerica and becoming stay-at-home mom Lynette Scavo. "It was a rocky transition," she told LA Daily News. If I look at the first four or five episodes, I couldn't get [creator Marc Cherry's] rhythms. I was sure I was gonna get fired, to tell you the truth. And I think two or three years ago, I would have been fired. But now my name has a little more juice, so I think they thought I'd figure it out."
Lynette is back in the office, but Huffman said she believes there is still a stigma attached to working mothers. "I read an article in Parents or Child magazine that asked what percentage of mothers felt guilty for working full- or part-time. It was something like 87.6 percent. What percentage of fathers felt guilty working full- or part-time? Goose egg. Zilch. So you can't tell me we're not culturally pushing women, saying, 'You belong in the home.'"
Huffman said she thinks her husband William H. Macy doesn't feel as guilty as she does about working, and that helps him be a better parent. "Men don't have that heart-wrenching, I'm-doing-something-wrong, I'm-a-bad-mother, what-would-a-real-mother-do, am-I-ruining- my-kids kind of thing," she said. "Bill's a great dad. I think he's a better dad than I am a mom. And one of the reasons is that he doesn't move through that kind of guilt. For me, things are a crisis situation. He's like, 'They're fine! I'm fine! Let's read a book.' He's just easier about it.
