By Christian October 8, 2005 - 9:47 PMWhen Roger Bart was part of the Broadway cast of The Producers, he always knew exactly when he would need to show up for work. On Desperate Housewives, his schedule is more hectic -- but the actor recently revealed that overall, his role as George Williams has provided him with a lot of free time.
"We did 16 hours one day this week, and the following day we did about 11 hours," Bart told the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. "Yet the kind of part I have on television, right now I work seven or eight days a month. It is wonderful because I can spend a lot of time in New York with my 4 1/2 -year-old daughter, Eller."
Although George Williams is one of DH's most nasty characters, Bart said there's more to his character than just pure evil, saying he's also "sensitive. He is the guy who is just your neighborhood druggist who greets you with a smile, and little do you know underneath he’s angry. I think he’s been wounded over time and he’s very, very angry. I think that George loves Bree. He thinks, 'Gosh, I love her, and she’s made me so mad at times, but I want to do everything I can to have her and protect her. But I expect more from Bree, considering how much I have put out.'
According to Bart, the main reason he's been able to pull of playing a complicated character like Williams is the talent of his co-star Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp). "She is able to manage those things so beautifully, between making the absurd very truthful and funny, and at the same time she can be profoundly moving," Bart said. "I had a great training ground in the theater because the shows I do, so many of them have been musicals, and it is important to make that segue into song almost imperceptible and graceful. […] This world is similar in that way – you have to be completely honest."
