Nicolette Sheridan (Edie Britt) recently revealed that if it hadn't been for Desperate Housewives, she might have quit acting altogether.
"It just happened that I'd been playing a lot of stroke victims," Contact Music quoted Sheridan as saying. "There were a couple of movies, mostly made for TV, in which I'd either been a stroke victim or going through seizures. It was either that or playing someone's mother."
Sheridan had previously played the role of Paige Matheson on the soap opera Knots Landing, but that show was already more than a decade behind her by the time she was cast in the role of Edie Britt. "[Not] long before Desperate Housewives came along, I'd decided that I was going to write a TV show of my own, featuring the sort of character that I wanted to play - a strong, sexy, confident, funny role."
Having found such a role on Desperate Housewives, Sheridan seems intent to protect the image of her show. Speaking recently to the Irish Examiner, she said that rumors of the DH stars not getting along were wildly overblown. "It's so funny, all this talk about what goes on between the women in the cast," she said. "If we were five men, there wouldn't be this discussion. We all get along fine. Of course, I can only speak for myself, but as far as I'm concerned, I have great respect and admiration for my co-stars, I thoroughly enjoy working with them and the only complaint I have is that I wish I had more time on set."
Besides giving her a challenging acting job again, Sheridan recently revealed that the show has also given her new insight in American women, as she discovered that her character really wasn't as grossly exaggerated as she thought. "What's interesting is the number of women I've run into since the beginning of the show who've said that they identify with Edie or that they'd like to," she said, again quoted on Contact Music. "I find that a little shocking. I saw a woman on the Oprah Winfrey show recently who said she has sex six times a day and I thought, 'Wow, there was Edie thinking she was on top in that department, but it turns out she really has something to live up to."
More from Sheridan can be found in the first and second Contact Music articles, and the full Irish Examiner article. Discuss this news item at Talk Desperate!
